History of the Ann Davis Transition Society
The Ann Davis Transition Society was incorporated as a non-profit society
in 1978, to offer shelter and support through Ann Davis Transition House, to
women and their children who are leaving abusive situations. As a non-profit
society, our services are free of charge. Prior to 1978 a "safe house"
network existed where women needing safety were housed with members of the
transition house committee. Staff are now available at the transition house
24-hours a day to give information and assistance, and other services are
offered at Ann Davis Transition Society.
Abuse has many forms: physical, emotional, sexual, financial and includes
neglect. The effect on individuals is poor self esteem, lack of confidence,
often the inability to make thoughtful decisions, to have healthy
relationships and to parent. Frequently children have difficulties socially
and academically and may show signs of depression or act out aggressively.
If new patterns of behaviour are not learned by adults and children, the
cycle of abuse is perpetuated and becomes intergenerational.
Ann Davis Transition Society has offices in Hope, Agassiz and Chilliwack. In Hope and
Agassiz we have women's counsellors. In Chilliwack we offer individual and
group counselling for women and children, advocacy around legal issues and
problems with government services, outreach to parents and expressive arts
therapy for children, mediation, and a men's support circle. Details are given under "Programs".
We are funded, primarily, by the Ministry of Women's Equality, many
groups and service clubs, the Vancouver Foundation and the generous
donations of individuals. Our combined services see approximately 280 women
and 320 children a year.
